Dr. Ernest Barth茅lemy Presents on Global Neurosurgery and Neurocritical Care at Scientific Meetings
By Office of the President | Jan 10, 2023
Congratulations to Ernest J. Barth茅lemy, M.D., MPH, MA, our recently-appointed Chief of Neurosurgery, for his presentation at two critically-important international scientific meetings. These events are related to global surgery and the global neurosurgery enterprise he is actively developing at Downstate.
Dr. Barth茅lemy attended the Continental Association of African Neurosurgical Societies Congress in Nairobi, Kenya (). His role was as a faculty member for two hands-on workshops aimed at Kenyan and other African neurosurgery residents: a spine surgery cadaver lab and a brain surgery simulation course. Dr. Barth茅lemy also co-moderated a session on the decolonization of global neurosurgery and presented talks on global neurosurgery training opportunities for young neurosurgeons and the activities of the Young Neurosurgeons Forum of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS).

The second meeting was the 40th Latin American Congress of Neurosurgery, , held in Miami, and the first US-based meeting for FLANC, the continental society representing neurosurgeons from the Latin American region. Dr. Barth茅lemy moderated sessions on Global Neurosurgery and Neurocritical Care and presented talks on Spine Trauma Management in Low-Resource Settings, Damage Control in Traumatic Spinal Injury, Brain Oxygenation Monitoring in Neurocritical Care, and an Update on Traumatic Brain Injury Management.

Dr. Barth茅lemy鈥檚 work is unique and critical to our work at Downstate. Far beyond what we usually see as health disparities in communities of color鈥攈igh blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses鈥攚e must also look at other health and medical challenges that affect the population. Far too often, communities of color have little knowledge of neurological impairments or access to the critical care necessary for treatment. Dr. Barth茅lemy鈥檚 work opens up an entirely new avenue for connecting with our unique and diverse communities.
Thank you, Dr. Barth茅lemy, for bringing these critical discussions to the forefront.
