DMI Student Awarded Echocardiography Scholarship

By Office of the President | Mar 6, 2023

Eden Chin

Downstate Diagnostic Medical Imaging (DMI) student Eden Chin received the 2023 Alan D. Waggoner Student Scholarship Award from the American Society of Echocardiography Foundation (ASEF) for her outstanding academic and personal accomplishments. Ms. Chin was invited to attend ASE鈥檚 2023 Scientific Sessions conference, 鈥淔oundations and the Future of Cardiovascular Ultrasound,鈥 in June, where she will be recognized. Ms. Chin and her fellow scholarship awardees will also be recognized in an upcoming Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography issue.

Before enrolling in the DMI program, Ms. Chin worked with a pediatric cardiologist to gain medical experience, allowing her to discover the ultrasound field and how echocardiograms can be used to diagnose heart pathologies. She decided that the field of ultrasound, with its mix of technology, people, and analytical skills, was a perfect fit as a career choice.

含羞草研究所 Downstate was the first institution in the United States to offer a Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Imaging; the program is accredited for Cardiac, Abdomen, Obstetrics & Gynecology imaging setting it apart from other programs. Students do not have to select a track and may take the national American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) registry examinations before graduation. The program鈥檚 pass rate on the ARDMS examinations is significantly above the national average.

Ms. Chin enrolled at Downstate for her bachelor鈥檚 degree and found the faculty and staff supportive of a culture of inclusion because students are prepared for clinical and community experiences with diverse populations.

Congratulations, Ms. Chin, and thank you for your contributions to Downstate. Many thanks to Allen Lewis, Ph.D., CRC, School of Health Professions dean and professor, and Yosefa Pessin, DHSc, RDMS, program chair & DMI director, for developing a comprehensive program that nurtures and encourages our students.
