Pathology Reports and AI: Dr. Steimetz Highlights Need for Human Oversight in MedPage Today Feature
Congratulations to Eric Steimetz, M.D., MPH, PGY3 Pathology Chief Resident, for being featured in MedPage Today, the widely read
online newsletter for healthcare professionals. Dr. Steimetz鈥檚 recent study, published
in JAMA Network Open, explores the potential of AI chatbots like Google鈥檚 Bard and OpenAI鈥檚 GPT-4 in interpreting
pathology reports.
While GPT-4 was relatively accurate, other AI sources introduced medical mistakes, unwarranted inferences about a patient鈥檚 condition, and AI 鈥渉allucinations,鈥 making it clear that AI technology still requires clinician oversight. Dr. Steimetz鈥檚 study underscores the importance of human expertise in healthcare.
