Mission Statement
Downstate Health Sciences University is committed to advancing interprofessional collaborative practice and improving the health of the communities we serve by providing high-quality, evidence-based continuing education planned by and for the healthcare team. Through educational activities that engage physicians, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers, physician associates, rehabilitation professionals, educators, community-based practitioners, and other healthcare professionals, OCME seeks to enhance knowledge, competence, skills, strategy, and performance across healthcare disciplines.
This mission is accomplished through a diverse portfolio of educational activities, including regularly scheduled conferences, grand rounds, tumor boards, live and virtual courses, regional and national symposia, interprofessional workshops, and enduring materials. Educational content addresses clinical practice, healthcare quality, patient safety, health equity, population health, and social determinants of health, with particular attention to health disparities affecting the Brooklyn community and beyond.
The expected outcomes of the OCME program are to improve the skills, strategies, and performance of healthcare teams; strengthen interprofessional collaboration and communication; support evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives; and contribute to improved patient, community, and population health outcomes through lifelong learning and continuous professional development.
