Emergency and Acute Care at Kings County Hospital Center
Kings County Hospital Center (KCHC) provides residents with an exceptional pediatric emergency medicine experience in one of New York City's busiest public hospitals. As a Level I Trauma Center serving Central Brooklyn and surrounding communities, KCHC exposes residents to a broad spectrum of pediatric emergencies, from common acute illnesses to critically ill and injured children requiring complex resuscitation and multidisciplinary care.
Residents take an active role in the evaluation and management of patients, performing procedures, participating in trauma activations, and leading resuscitations under close faculty supervision. This high-volume clinical environment fosters progressive autonomy while building confidence in clinical decision-making and procedural skills. The Pediatric Emergency Department is staffed by board-certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians, emergency medicine physicians, and pediatric faculty dedicated to resident education. The department also serves as a collaborative learning environment with trainees from Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, and other consulting specialties.
Emergency and Acute Care at University Hospital at Downstate (The Children's Hospital at Downstate)
The Children's Hospital at Downstate provides a busy pediatric emergency and acute care experience through its Acute Care Receiving Center (ACRC), a designated 911 receiving facility serving children from across Central Brooklyn. Residents evaluate and manage infants, children, and adolescents presenting with a wide range of medical and surgical emergencies in a dedicated pediatric emergency setting.
A distinctive aspect of the Downstate experience is exposure to children with medically complex and chronic conditions who receive specialty care through the hospital's comprehensive pediatric subspecialty services. The ACRC also serves as a referral center for community pediatricians, providing residents with experience caring for both acute presentations and patients with complex ongoing medical needs. Residents work closely with board-certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine faculty in an environment that emphasizes evidence-based care, teamwork, and graduated responsibility.
Emergency and Acute Care at South Brooklyn Health
South Brooklyn Health (formerly Coney Island Hospital) provides residents with additional experience in pediatric emergency and acute care within a community-based hospital setting. Residents care for infants, children, and adolescents presenting with a wide variety of acute medical conditions while developing skills in the evaluation, stabilization, and management of pediatric emergencies.
This rotation complements the tertiary care experiences at Kings County Hospital Center and University Hospital at Downstate by exposing residents to the spectrum of illnesses commonly encountered in community emergency practice. Working alongside experienced pediatricians, emergency medicine physicians, and multidisciplinary teams, residents strengthen their clinical decision-making, procedural skills, and ability to provide high-quality, family-centered care across diverse patient populations.
