Residency Training Program in General Pediatrics
Our ambulatory curriculum provides residents with a comprehensive outpatient experience that complements their inpatient training and prepares them for careers in primary care, hospital medicine, and pediatric subspecialties. Through rotations at University Hospital at Downstate, Kings County Hospital Center, and South Brooklyn Health, residents care for children across the full spectrum of health and disease while developing the skills necessary to provide high-quality, family-centered, longitudinal care.
Ambulatory General Pediatrics and Pediatric Subspecialty Clinics
Residents rotate through outpatient clinics at University Hospital at Downstate and Kings County Hospital Center, where they gain experience in both general pediatrics and a broad range of pediatric subspecialties. Working alongside expert faculty, residents evaluate and manage children with common outpatient concerns as well as medically complex conditions requiring multidisciplinary care.
Subspecialty experiences include, but are not limited to, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Allergy and Immunology, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonology, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine, and other pediatric specialty clinics. Residents participate in the full spectrum of outpatient care, including new consultations, longitudinal follow-up, multidisciplinary clinics, and specialty procedures when appropriate.
During required and elective subspecialty rotations, residents are fully integrated into each division's clinical activities, participating in outpatient clinics, inpatient consultations, multidisciplinary conferences, and educational sessions. This comprehensive exposure allows residents to appreciate the continuity of care for children with chronic and complex medical conditions while strengthening their diagnostic reasoning and clinical decision-making.
Continuity Clinic
Longitudinal continuity clinic is a cornerstone of our residency curriculum. Residents establish their own patients and provide ongoing primary care throughout all three years of training. Continuity clinic experiences take place at University Hospital at Downstate and South Brooklyn Health, allowing residents to care for children from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds across a variety of clinical settings.
Residents follow patients from the newborn period through adolescence, providing preventive care, developmental surveillance, immunizations, acute sick visits, and management of chronic medical conditions. Many patients are first encountered in the newborn nursery, inpatient units, or emergency department, allowing residents to develop meaningful longitudinal relationships with patients and families while gaining firsthand experience with continuity of care.
Faculty provide close supervision, direct observation, and individualized feedback while fostering progressive autonomy as residents advance through training. Educational experiences within continuity clinic emphasize evidence-based medicine, quality improvement, preventive care, behavioral and developmental health, care coordination, patient advocacy, and the social determinants of health. By graduation, residents are well prepared to independently manage a diverse pediatric patient panel in both academic and community practice settings.
