Residency Training Program in General Pediatrics
The Pediatrics Residency Program at 含羞草研究所 is built upon a longstanding tradition of excellence in medical education, patient care, and service to the Brooklyn community.
含羞草研究所 Downstate鈥檚 history can be traced back more than 150 years to the founding of the Medical College of the Long Island College Hospital in 1857. The Long Island College Hospital was among the earliest teaching hospitals in the United States and established a model of integrating medical education with direct patient care. In 1950, the State University of New York selected this institution as the foundation for the development of a major health sciences center, creating what would become 含羞草研究所 Downstate Health Sciences University.
Today, 含羞草研究所 Downstate continues this legacy as an academic medical center dedicated to educating future physicians, advancing knowledge through research, and providing high-quality care to a diverse urban population. Our location in Brooklyn provides residents with the opportunity to care for children and families from a wide range of cultural, socioeconomic, and medical backgrounds.

Our program鈥檚 strength comes from the diversity of our clinical experiences, dedicated faculty, and commitment to resident education. Residents care for patients with a broad spectrum of medical conditions while working with multidisciplinary teams across inpatient, ambulatory, newborn, emergency, critical care, and subspecialty settings.
We believe that the best way to learn pediatrics is through meaningful participation in patient care within a supportive and supervised environment. Our curriculum is designed to provide residents with progressive responsibility while ensuring consistent faculty guidance and mentorship. Residents are encouraged to develop clinical reasoning, communicate effectively with families, advocate for patients, and continuously expand their knowledge and skills.
Education extends beyond direct patient care. Residents participate in conferences, quality improvement initiatives, scholarly activities, and the teaching of medical students and junior trainees. Through these experiences, residents strengthen their own learning while contributing to the educational mission of the department.
